We work with general design solutions for the complete media production expression, and who are capable of working in various professional contexts in film, TV, or computer-based media production teams. On this area of specialisation students work with a methodical approach to concept development and formulation, coordination and production of design for narrative media, which unfold through live images in such forms as films, TV, and other visual media productions. It is the production designer’s task to ensure homogeneity in the work / the production’s combined visual expression. This is achieved by anchoring a series of design assignments, scenography, costumes, motion graphics, art direction, and special effects in or around the production designer’s function.

Production Design is thus the primary tool for the fashioning and communication of media productions‘ visual manifestations. By working with different visualisation methods, ranging from sketching audiovisual parameters and developing conceptual and conditional storyboards to model-making and layout drawing, the production designer becomes able to manage and control a given production’s design in relation to the work’s general visual idea and contents, whilst at the same time complying with the schedule, finances, and physical framework of the production. This is usually achieved by means of analyses of a text material, an interpretation of its premisses, and the development and concretisation of relevant design concepts.
Teaching is organised partly as courses, partly as projects, and it consists of theory, practice and analysis. Part of the practical work takes place outside Danmarks Designskole as traineeships or exchange stays abroad, or in close collaboration with the National Film School of Denmark.

A Production Design graduate will be able to grasp comprehensive complexities, develop, visualise, structuralise, and communicate a visual concept on the basis of text analysis. The student is expected to have insight into applied theories and methods, have practical experience of the process, and have obtained expertise in foundational skills as well as in the basic tools. Multidisciplinary competencies are necessary, and graduates must be able to combine and focus competencies according to their interests
